Molecular typing has irreversibly gained access to the clinical microbiology laboratory. Over the past decade, a methodology that was initially laborious, expensive and complex, has been adapted to accommodate the workflow in a high-throughput medical working environment. Molecular methods have evolved and various categories of nucleic acid-mediated approaches have been screened for clinical utility over the years.
